Whether your preferred doctors and healthcare providers participate in the plan.

WHEN CAN YOU ENROLL IN MEDICARE?

Your Enrollment Opportunity Depends on Your Situation

Senior Couple Smiling

Medicare has different enrollment periods depending on your circumstances. Knowing which period applies to you can help you understand when you may be able to enroll or change coverage.

ANNUAL ELECTION PERIOD

The Medicare Annual Election Period generally runs from October 15 through December 7 each year. Changes made during this period generally take effect January 1 of the following year.

INITIAL ENROLLMENT PERIOD

When you're first eligible for Medicare, you generally have a seven-month Initial Enrollment Period surrounding your 65th birthday month.

MEDICARE ADVANTAGE OPEN ENROLLMENT PERIOD

If you're already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period may provide an opportunity to make certain changes between January 1 and March 31.

GENERAL ENROLLMENT PERIOD

The General Enrollment Period generally runs from January 1 through March 31 for people who need to enroll in Medicare Part A and/or Part B after missing their Initial Enrollment Period.

OTHER SPECIAL ENROLLMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Certain life events and changes in coverage may create a Special Enrollment Period.

Not sure which enrollment period applies to you?

Enrollment rules, eligibility and effective dates depend on your individual circumstances.

UNDERSTANDING THE PARTS OF MEDICARE

Medicare Coverage Is Divided Into Different Parts

Understanding the basic parts of Medicare can help you better understand the coverage options available to you.

Medicare Part A

Hospital Insurance

Part A generally helps cover eligible inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care and certain home health services.

Medicare Part B

Medical Insurance

Part B generally helps cover eligible doctor services, outpatient care, preventive services, medical supplies and other covered medical services.

Medicare Part C

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by Medicare-approved private organizations and provide Medicare-covered Part A and Part B services through the plan. Many plans also include prescription drug coverage and may offer additional benefits.

Medicare Part D

Prescription Drug Coverage

Part D helps cover prescription drugs through Medicare-approved private plans. Prescription coverage may be provided through a standalone Part D plan or included with many Medicare Advantage plans.

NOT SURE WHAT YOU NEED?

You don't have to figure it all out by yourself.

A licensed Medicare specialist can help you understand the differences between available Medicare coverage options and determine what may be worth considering based on your situation.
