Bronze, Silver, Gold: Demystifying ACA Marketplace Metal Tiers
Confused by health insurance metal tiers? JRF Services breaks down how to choose between Bronze, Silver, and Gold Marketplace plans.
What do the different "metal tiers" mean on the Health Insurance Marketplace?
Plans on the ACA Marketplace are divided into Bronze, Silver, and Gold tiers. These tiers do not reflect the quality of medical care you receive. Instead, they indicate how you and your plan split your healthcare costs.
Bronze: Has the lowest monthly premiums but the highest out-of-pocket costs when you need medical care.
Silver: Features moderate monthly premiums and moderate out-of-pocket costs. This is the only tier eligible for extra savings called "cost-sharing reductions."
Gold: Features higher monthly premiums but the lowest out-of-pocket costs when you receive care.
How do I know which metal tier is right for my family?
It comes down to balancing your monthly budget against your expected medical needs. If you are generally healthy and only see the doctor for annual checkups, a Bronze plan might save you money. If you have chronic conditions or take regular prescriptions, a Gold plan can protect you from high deductibles. At JRF Services, we perform a custom financial mapping of your income and household needs to find the exact financial sweet spot.
Can I switch my metal tier at any time during the year?
Generally, no. You can only choose or change your plan tier during the annual
Open Enrollment Period or if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period due to a major life event.
