HMO vs. PPO: How to Avoid Accidentally Losing Your Favorite Doctor
Don't get caught out-of-network. JRF Services explains the critical differences between HMO and PPO health insurance plan networks.
What is the difference between an HMO and a PPO health plan?
HMO vs PPO? The difference lies entirely in freedom and cost:
HMO (Health Maintenance Organization): Requires you to use a specific network of doctors and get referrals from a Primary Care Physician (PCP) to see a specialist. It features lower premiums but zero coverage for out-of-network care (except emergencies).
PPO (Preferred Provider Organization): Gives you the freedom to see any doctor or specialist without a referral, both in-network and out-of-network. However, it comes with higher monthly premiums.
What happens if I accidentally see a doctor who is out-of-network?
If you are on an HMO plan, your insurance company will likely deny the claim entirely, leaving you responsible for 100% of the medical bill. On a PPO plan, the insurance will cover a portion of the bill, but your out-of-pocket copays and deductibles will be substantially higher than if you stayed in-network.
