Scam Protection & ID Theft: How to Spot Common Scams

Scams can be the first step toward identity theft. Learn how to recognize suspicious texts, emails, phone calls, fake account alerts, impersonation attempts and payment requests. This FAQ explains practical ways to slow down, verify messages and protect your information, plus how Scam Detect and other identity-protection services may provide additional resources when you're unsure whether a message or request is legitimate.

What is a scam?

A scam is a deceptive attempt to obtain money, personal information, account access, or another benefit. Scammers often create urgency so victims feel pressured to act before thinking.

What is phishing?

Phishing is a technique where criminals use deceptive messages to persuade people to reveal information or click harmful links. The FTC recommends avoiding unexpected links and contacting companies through known legitimate channels.

What are common warning signs?

Be cautious when a message:

  • Creates extreme urgency

  • Threatens immediate consequences

  • Requests passwords or sensitive information

  • Requests payment through unusual methods

  • Contains unexpected links

  • Claims to be from a government agency or financial institution

  • Asks you to keep the transaction secret

What is Scam Detect? | Scam Protection

Our ID protection plan includes Scam Detect as a scam-analysis tool and 24/7 service intended to help consumers evaluate suspicious communications and potential scams.

Should I call the number in a suspicious message?

It is safer to locate the organization's official phone number independently. For example, if you receive a message claiming to be from your bank, open your bank's official website or use the number printed on a legitimate statement or card.

What if someone claims my account is about to be closed?

Don't panic. Urgency is frequently used as a pressure tactic. Instead, independently contact the organization and verify whether there is actually a problem.

What if I already gave a scammer my password?

Change the password immediately. If that password was used elsewhere, change those accounts too. Turn on multifactor authentication where available. The FTC specifically recommends changing compromised passwords and enabling two-factor authentication when appropriate.

What if I gave a scammer my Social Security number?

If the information has been misused or you believe you are a victim of identity theft, visit IdentityTheft.gov for a personalized recovery plan. The FTC recommends reporting suspected misuse of Social Security information through the site.
